Birth of Pandit Balkrushnabuva Ichalkaranjeekar – he was the first-generation classical singer who learned classical vocal by going to Dhar and Gwalher. He brought Gwalher Style of Classical Singing to Maharashtra

He provided music to Marathi Sangeet Natak produced by Bombay Royal Opera Company of Vasudev Narayan Dongre around 1881.

1850

Balambhat Bapat establishes 'Ichalkarnjikar Mandali' under patronage of Ghorpade (rural of the Ichalkaranjee State). Babaji Shastri Datar, a learned grammarian in the Sankrit Tradition wrote Akhyans, directed and composed music. The company performed Akhyans in Bhave mode but then added 'farces' to their repertoire.

Company was later joined by Raghoba a fine actor who also managed the company which dissolved in 1892.

1850

Birth of Vasudev Narayan Dongre at Wadajun village of Ratnagiri District who established Bombay Royal Opera Company also know as Dongare Sangeet Company. He opposed too much use of folk music (Lavani) in Sangeet Natak by Kirloskar

Translated various plays from Sankrut language to Marathi like Malatimadhav; Ratnavali and wrote and staged plays in Marathi.

 

Nana Sohani and Anantbuva Budhakar (Tasgaonkar Natak Mandali); Ravaji Shaharkar (Punekar Natak Mandali); Sakharambova Chanmbalikar Sarnaik (Sangalikar Natak Mandali); and Govindas (Kolhapurkar Natak Mandali) were other poets who wrote 'Akhyans' on the lines of Vishnudas Bhave.

Bhave loses patronage to his drama troup.

(Pestanji Dhanajibhai Master was first director of the company. company toured across and outside the India also - Rangoon and Singapore in 1878 and to London 1885. It closed down in 1923.

Balwantrao Marathe establishes 'Nutan Sangalikar Mandali'. This company went beyond Maharashtra both in the North and South. It had 32 Hindi plays in its repertoire when sangeet natak came to the fore.

Marathe changed named of the company to Sanglikar Sangeet Hindi Natak Mandali and continued till 1910.

These plays which came from Sanskrit and English in Marathi resulted into writing of original Marathi prose plays

Birth of Dattopant Hallyalkar - a famous actor of Marathi Sangeet Natak. He started his career in 1884 and consciously modelled himself (admirer-at-a-distance) after Bhaurao Kolhatkar. Played female roles up to 1898 and then only male roles. He never joined any company as an employee.

He has such a powerful voice that to provide adequate drone two or more large size pedal harmoniums were required to be employed.

Play Naldamayanti – written and produced by Soker Bapuji Trilokekar - It is said that Trilokekar stopped practice of only Sutradhar (Narrator) singing all the songs of the play and adopted practice of each character singing its own song in the play.

New research showed that Annasaheb Kirloskar adopted this practice first but it was done in Belgaon in 1875 as noted above -

Instrumental in bringing Balgandharv in Kirloskar. In Play Manapman he Scored over Balgandharv in singing. Very capable manager of KSNM.

Khandekar wrote this Sangeet Natak for a competition to win prize of Rs. 1000 organised by a social worker to show good aspects of Municipal Body. This was first published book of Khandekar. After this Khander wrote Sangeet Natakas – sheelshodhan, mohanmal, shantidevata, mruglanchhan and swarajyache taat but this period was of decline of Sangeet Natak so these plays did not have many shows and Khandekar also turn away from play writing.  

Nobody got prize but one of the reviewers of competition Bhausaheb Soman from Belgaon liked this play and recommended it for production. Khandekar’s school friend Vasudev Waman Atitkar published it.
